Selling out can be a good thing, or a bad thing. Selling out my books at an event is good. Selling out by compromising one's integrity in exchange for personal gain is bad.
Many celebrities sell out for a heap of cash. They lend their name--often a brand--to a book that was actually authored by a ghost writer. An author, or a team of writers and researchers, creates a book, then the celeb goes on the talk-show circuit to promote it as if they'd written it themselves. And even if the book is just a rehash of sure-fail gimmicks or caloric restriction with a new face on it, they push it as if it's the new "miracle" cure--a supposed quick and easy way to lose weight.
Some celebrities endorse diets, supplements or other products in exchange for large sums of money. You've seen several B-list celebrities on television commercials for expensive diet programs that typically require you to purchase packaged meals or meal substitutes. That's not teaching you life skills; it's creating dependency. Just because a celebrity tells you a book or program works, does not mean it's true.
As an independent, self-published author, I spent several years of my spare time writing, researching and revising my book Personal Best. I put my heart and soul and perhaps a thousand hours or more of my time into this project. I didn't show up like a celebrity once the book was complete and slap my name on the cover. Why would a celebrity do what I've done? Why would they invest so much of their time and effort--all unpaid--to create something? Most of them don't. I put in the sweat equity because I truly believe in my work. I believe that my book can help people improve their fitness, health and overall wellness--not just in the short term, but for life. I've received very positive feedback from readers whose lives I've positively impacted.
Yes, I am thrilled when my books sell out, but when it comes to my principles, I will never sell out!
